“Running”

It’s just
you
and me.

Concrete slapping,
and my heels
hard tapping.

Sun blazing,
and the heat
unwavering.

Chest heaving,
and the thoughts
all leaving.

When I run,
I don’t do it
for fun.

Emotions messy,
and my nerves
testy.

Mother Nature,
the only opponent
to match my wager.

It’s just
her
against me.

And for now
the winner,
yet to be.
